Sinopsis-ul filmelor

1 martie 2007 - Forest of Bliss/ Pădurea fericirii
Forest of Bliss
Robert Gardner
SUA, 1986
90 min

Forest of Bliss is an unsparing yet redemptive account of the inevitable grieves, religious passions and frequent moments of happiness that punctuate daily life in Benares, India's most holy city. The film unfolds from one sunrise to the next without commentary, subtitles or dialogue. It is an attempt to give the viewer a wholly authentic though greatly magnified and concentrated sense of participation in the experiences examined by the film. "In late 1984 and early 1985 I was back in Benares making Forest of Bliss, a film about which I had pondered at length since my first unsettling visit ten years earlier. I have shaped the film so that it occupies the time between two sunrises. It stands as an exclusively visual statement resorting neither to voiced commentary nor subtitles. It is about people being and also dying.

Dite Dinesz
România, 2005

She was abandoned in an orphanage shortly after having been born; she was sexually abused, diagnosed with a mental handicap, and lived in a violent environment; she was subjected to physical and emotional pain. The film makes the portrait of this woman quoting from her own diary. Now, at 38, she can say that she has made it. She is a university graduate and has found a job as a teacher. But all the pain she has suffered has remained in her memory and on the pages of seventeen notebooks.

Lucky Draw
Jelena Jovcic

Serbia & Montenegro, 2004

Although not recorded and studied by psychologists or sociologists, the prolongued youth syndrome is frequent in Serbia. The term refers to people in their late twenties or even in their thirties, who are compelled to live with their parents because they have no other housing option. Jelena's family lives in Belgrade. Three generations live under one roof. At 27, Jelena wants a place of her own. Her father refuses to lend her the money she needs for the rent, but her mother is supportive. She collects coffee-bags, because the prizes offered by a promotional campaign for a coffee brand could be the answer to Jelena's problem.

5 martie 2007 - Black and White in Colour / Alb-negru în culori
Black and White in Colour
Mira Erdevicki
Czech Republic, 1999
58 min

A vivid documentary portrait of Vera Bílá, a Gypsy singer acclaimed in the international music world. The film explores Romany culture and what it means to be part of a marginalised minority group. Without sentimentalizing, it questions the prospects for mutual understanding. The character emerging from the film is a woman deeply attached to her family and her origins. Her music provides an opportunity for relieving her anxieties about securing sufficient food and money, but it also sweeps her into a competitive business which has little regard for her mood or feelings. The film reveals the exceptional energy Vera brings to her music and her relationships with her family and other members of the band. Shot as a journey with encounters and stories, the film shows a woman with an impressive and challenging personality.

6 martie 2007 - Miina! / Miina!
Miina!
Lasse Naukkarinen Finland, 2001 89 min

Who can fight EU regulations on farming and agriculture? Miina Akkijyrkka is a sculptor, but she is also a protector of Finncattle, the native Finnish dairy breed. She has never followed the mainstream and her courageous and strange actions have aroused a lot of controversy. Being and acting out of the ordinary, Miina is fervently hated by some, and admired and loved by others. This portrait-documentary follows Miina since the 80s to show the tensions and controversies in contemporary Finish society. Coming into conflict with the authorities and the EU directives, she also has controversies with animal protection organizations, gets arrested and her dogs are taken into custody. Meanwhile, she works at a huge statue made of parts of wrecked cars, which she calls The Holy Cow. "I have a big heart," Miina describes herself, "and I love insanity, deviance and everything abnormal. What others see as trash."

Cine poate lupta împotriva reglementărilor Uniunii Europene privind agricultura? Sculptoriţa Miina Akkijyrkka s-a declarat protectoarea unei rase finlandeze de vaci, neacceptată de UE. Toată viata ei, Miina a înotat împotriva curentului.

Shinjuku Boys
Kim Longinotto, Jano Williams UK, 1997 54min
A film about love and gender. This film is set in the New Marilyn night club in Tokyo where all the hosts are women who have decided to live as men. They make their living by working in a club with other 'onnabe' like them. The young women who come there often have relationships with them but the underlying fear is whether such a relationship can withstand the pressures on a girl to get married and have children.

"I was barely seventeen when I came to you. I was young and ignorant, but very proud of my native country, and even now, I am proud to have been born an Englishwoman... but I bless you, dear România, country of my joy and my grief, the beautiful country which has lived in my heart." (Queen Marie of România). The film is conceived as a personal account. Fragments of the Queen's biography are interpreted by the acclaimed actress Maia Morgenstern, whose profile is projected on a background of archive footage and photographs.

9 martie 2007 - Koriam's Law And The Dead Who Govern / Morţii care guvernează
Koriam's Law And The Dead Who Govern
Gary Kildea, Andrea Simon
Australia, 2005
110 min

The old man walks along the line of people waiting to receive him, leaning heavily on a cane. He shakes each proffered hand, moving closer, filling more and more of the frame. He looks to camera, and says, "Will I shake your hand too?" For a moment, it seems as though the question has been put to the viewer. But a voice off-screen answers in the affirmative, and a hand emerges from beneath the camera, taking the old man's and shaking it firmly. This instance, which blurs the line between viewer and film, filmmaker and subject, is typical of the documentary Koriam's Law - and the dead who govern. This is the story of the Kivung in the town of Pomio, an influential religious and political movement, called by some a 'cargo cult', on the island of East New Britain, Papua New Guinea.

Oath
Elizabeta Koneska

Macedonia, 2003
43 min

The film is an accurate ethnographic description of a traditional custom of the Yuruks, a Turkish ethnic group living in southeast Macedonia. The Yuruks were nomadic tribes who migrated from Anatolia to the Balkans about five centuries ago. Since their settlement, they have lived in closed communities, preserving their cultural identity. The custom described in the film reproduces a wedding where the bride is a little girl. The ritual, an oath to the Almighty, is meant to ensure the welfare of the family. The camera carefully observes the participants throughout all stages of the ritual and includes reactions of both actors and spectators.

Forgotten Goddesses
Anne Magnussen, Ellen Lundby
Norway, 1995
27 min

Maria Gimbutas was born in Lithuania in 1921 and came to the USA as a refugee after the second World War. Working in American universities, she soon became a leading authority in European Bronze Age history. She then combined her great knowledge about European linguistics, folklore, mythology and archaeology and started her great work about religion in the European Stone Age.
When she presented her theories about a peaceful and womancentred civilisation where goddesses were worshipped, she created a storm of controversy.

14 martie 2007 - Dhobighat / Dhobighat
Dhobighat
Giorgio Garini
Switzerland/ Italy, 2004
48 min

The film focuses on an Indian institution, which, like many others, tends to be regarded with disbelief by Westerners. Dhobighats are the world's largest open-air laundries. In many Indian cities, people do not wash their laundry at home. It is the job of the dhobi wallahs, i.e. the laundrymen. In Mumbay (formerly Bombay), four thousand dhobi wallahs wash, air, press and deliver the clothes of 15 million inhabitants. The dhobi wallahs have acquired certain fame, due to travel guides and tourist magazines accounts. Remarkably, their mysterious system allows them to identify every piece of clothing, in immense piles of laundry, and deliver it back to the right owner. The story goes that even the police sometimes use the dhobi marks in tracking down criminals. Still, the dhobi wallahs are considered low class citizens, and they are trapped in this hereditary occupation. Giorgio Garini's film has the merit to go beyond the exotic and spectacular appearance, to tell the story of these people.

16 martie 2007 - Sweet Life And All That Goes With That / Viaţa dulce de altădată
Sweet Life And All That Goes With That
Anne Schiltz
England, 2002
29 min

Rosi Muller and her father Michael are among the very few Saxons, or Transylvanian Germans, who still live in Alzen, a village in south Transylvania. Fifteen years ago, a dramatic change occured in the life of German towns and villages all over Transylvania. With the fall of communism, the quasi-total Saxon population migrated to Germany. After centuries during which they had maintained a strong sense of their cultural identity, the German communities disintegrated in only a few years. The film looks into issues like identity, migration, and the sense of belonging, following Rosi and Michael in their every day life. The people who live in the village today belong to a different culture. Alzen, like other Transylvanian German villages and towns, still remains " home" for the Saxons. This is for those who stayed, and for those who left.

19 martie 2007 - The Last Yugoslavian Football Team / Ultima naţională de fotbal a Iugoslaviei
The Last Yugoslavian Football Team
Vuk Janic
The Netherlands, 2000
83 min

The Film follows some of the football players of Yugoslavia's dream team of the 80s, exploring how political and ethnic conflicts can turn the sports area into a battlefield for political and ethnic disputes. Once idolized as national heroes, they were cheered by fans all over the country. Since the 90s, the separation of the ex-Yugoslavian republics has divided them into different national teams. Now, the former team-mates and friends are pitted against each other, and the same crowd that a few years ago used to revere them, now boo the Croatians playing in Belgrade and jeer the Serbs playing in Zagreb. The camaraderie that once united them during their glory days has not survived. In spite of their desire to continue their old friendship, they cannot resist the competitive pressure put on them by a spot that celebrates individual, physical dominance over the spirit of the game.

Visul potenţialei echipe nr.1 a Europei s-a sfârşit.

Germany/ Austria, 2004,
127 min

The Carpathians link the Alps with the Balkan Mountains like a spinal cord extending from Central Europe to the East, and branching off as far as western Ukraine. A journey to the rural regions of the Carpathians is an opportunity to encounter ethnic groups with weird names such as the Hutsul or the Gorals, to meet people who still live according to ancient customs and believe in wizards, to see traditional trades alive, and to realize that, as strange at it may seem, everything is part of a common European cultural heritage. This documentary is a poetic journey portraying people, places and the spectacular landscape of the Carpathian Mountains.

Strigoii
Florin Iepan
România, 1999

For those who know Transylvania and its history it is easy to understand why Bram Stoker chose it as a setting for his story of Dracula. By the middle of the seventeenth century, the Austro-Hungarian Empire sent special envoys to investigate the ever increasing number of cases when locals had dug out dead bodies from the graves and thrust stakes in their hearts. Eventually, the bodies were burned. Apparently, the ritual had no logical motivation. Furthermore, it was hard to explain why the respective bodies had conserved so well. After hundreds of years, the ritual is still alive. People perform it to kill the "Strigoi", the revenants, the ghosts. The author documented many cases of revenants haunting the living, killing their animals and sucking out their lives. People fight back with means they have inherited from a distant past, before the age of Christendom. Welcome to Transylvania in search of answers to the eternal questions of life and death, reality and fantasy, of paranormal and supernatural phenomena.

Dao Yaodong, a young Huayao Dai (Thai), lives in a village in Xinping County, in China's Yunnan Province. Television and DVDs, and the infrastructure built for the workers of the sugar cane factory nearby, have turned him into a great fan of commercial movies and city life amenities. He has adopted a new look to pass with his new expectations: he wears sunglasses and leather jackets, as he attempts to imitate his favorite movie stars. While the elders recall past virtues, Dao, alias Mr. Cool prepares to follow his elder brother. He wishes to leave behind his farmer's life, and move to the city. Based on observation and interviews, the film explores the impact of modernization and the media on traditional village life.

23 martie 2007 - Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgystan / Răpirea mireselor
Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgystan
Petr Lom
Canada / Czech Republic, 2004
52 min

The film observes an ancient Kyrgyz custom, which is still active today although it has been declared illegal some years ago. In Kyrgyzstan, one of the former Soviet Republics in Central Asia, a man would abduct the woman he has chosen for a wife. Typically, he takes several friends, hires a car, stakes out his bride-to-be's movements, snatches her off the street, and takes her to his family home. A delegation is then sent to her family to inform them of the kidnapping. The abducted woman is kept by the groom's relatives until someone from her family arrives to discuss the marriage. The level of consent and the familiarity of the bride with the groom vary. Sometimes the kidnappings are consensual - the bride is engaged to the groom and agrees to the kidnapping. In this case, the kidnappings are merely playful rituals. In many other cases however, the bride does not want to marry her suitor, or has never even met him before. Recent studies estimate that about half of all marriages in Kyrgyzstan today are conducted through kidnapping and that in half of these cases the woman is forced into marriage against her will. This documentary follows the dramatic stories of four of non-consensual kidnappings.

This film explores the issue of the migration of Saxons, or Transylvanian Germans, to Germany. Before 1989, many Saxons living in România applied for migration. Very few, however, actually received the approval of the communist authorities. Some managed to flee across the border. Still, others waited long years simply to receive permission to visit their relatives in Germany. With the fall of communism, the borders finally opened, and the majority of the Saxon population decided to leave România. As a result, entire villages were depopulated. The ethnic configuration of the population changed completely in just a few years. The film follows the lives of some of the few Saxons still living, near Sibiu, in the village of Hammersdorf.

28 martie 2007 - Bury Me Twice / Înmormântaţi a doua oară
Bury Me Twice

Germany, 1995

"River of borrowed life" is the description for earth in the sacred language of the Ngaju-Dayak. Earthly existence to them seems to be a troublesome stage of transition. Death consequently is not a tragic event for a dying person, but promises access to eternal life in the village of the dead in the upper world. The bones of the deceased are put in an artistically decorated shrine specially made for bones. The entire cosmos: plants, animals and human beings are created new once again through reciting the myth of creation. The film shows the different rituals that were executed on the occasion of a Tiwah ceremony in 1993. It lasted 38 days.

An excellent anthropological approach to the everyday life of an old woman, who lives in a modest house in the mountains far from her village of birth. The filmmaker follows her daily routine with great sensitivity, conveying the hardships she faces living alone. The film documents the ethnografic aspects of her rural life, such as bread making, sheep milking, and haycock building, in an organic manner which does not overpower the flow of the story. For her, the days and seasons unfold slowly. Occasionally, the simple pattern of her lonely life is punctuated by news from the village brought by her son. In a slow, yet captivating rhythm, the film succeeds to portray a world very different from our fast-paced reality.
